[i] Sonqo means "peace" in Quechua. The story is supposed to be set in a Quechua village. This theme is not followed consistently, but it is visited at various points. For example, birth really is a communal event in Quechua societies.
[ii] Calamaro is a common last name in Perú, but is also significant to the story. It closely resembles the Spanish word "calamar" (squid). Female squid are animals that die, (the vast majority of the time), in childbirth. In the story, women who marry into the Calamaro family have a history of dying in childbirth.
[iii] Put another way, Calamaro men are murderers and even baby Juan-Carlo is described as such.
