Strasburg, September 26, 1998: The Council of Europe decides to establish and promote the celebration of the European Day of Languages in a pioneering way. The idea is to convince 800 million Europeans that the linguistic diversity existing in Modern Europe does not hinder communication but serves as the key to intercultural understanding; in other words promoting language learning within the EU and among the European citizens guarrantees and perpetuates our cultural richness as active member states. From that day onwards, celebrations on the European Day of Languages include a wide range of events particulary for children, radio and television programmes broadcasting for all states. Schools organise and coordinate activities; classes, conferences and lectures are given at Universities and the so-called National Relay Persons feedback the Council of Europe on the occasion. What initiative sprung from all the above?
